Expectations

We are adults. On any given day, we are asked to handle adult situations. Whether we are wearing the hat of mom, dad, grandmother, wife, husband, friend, or employee, we are adults. We always do our level best at responding to situations in an adult manner. Sure, there were times we failed, just as everyone has. Emotions get the best of us all from time to time. However, in general, we are pretty good at the adulting thing.

In the past year or so, more than once, I have been complimented for behaving well at a festival, not causing problems at gatherings, and practicing forbearance in irritating situations and with insolent people.

Forbearance - Patient self-control; restraint and tolerance.

While I appreciate the kind words, I found acknowledgement of self control odd. Are there those waiting on me to explode in a public tirade? Drop a house on someone? Have I ever been rude, disrespectful, contrite, or gone off on anyone at a public festival or gathering? No. Public shows of disdain for anyone is not my way. When I (we) are at an event, whether it is ours or someone else's, we respect the sacredness of the place and time. We appreciate the work and effort that has gone into an event for our benefit. Whatever the occasion, it gets our full attention. Why would anyone think otherwise? We go for the enjoyment, comradery, meeting new people, socializing, learning, healing, and for the most part, FUN. We enjoy ourselves.

ON THE OTHER HAND...what you may be seeing is indifference toward a person or situation.

Indifference - lack of interest, concern or sympathy; apathy.

Sometimes one just has to say, "This/he/she is not worth my energy," and we won't waste our time fueling an irrelevant fire. This equates to "I don't give a flying f-bomb." We will not be provoked by another's public foolishness. We are better than that. Further, it is not a requirement for anyone to give audience to someone or something that might cause distress, in public.

OR, ON ANOTHER HAND....we might simply be biding our time. Timing is everything.

"Patience is power. Patience is not an absence of action; rather it is "timing." It waits on the right time to act, for the right principles and in the right way." - Fulton J. Sheen

Personally, I'm a patient Witch. I have been waiting out situations for years - waiting for the perfect time. In most cases, I let things simmer (back burner - low heat). Allowing things to simmer a long time usually results in total evaporation with no effort on my part or anyone else. However, if there is ever a situation that needs my/our immediate personal attention, rest assured that a public forum is not where it will be addressed. Timing IS everything.

“It is what you do not expect that most needs looking for.” ― Neal Stephenson, Anathem
